Students are universally challenged
The BBC has disqualified University Challenge’s winning team for breaking the rules by using a contestant who was no longer a student. The title has been transferred to the University of Manchester, the team beaten by Corpus Christi College, Oxford on the TV quiz last week.
A BBC spokesman said that they did have doubts about team member Sam Kay at the show’s audition when he struggled with some warm up questions about Neighbours and didn’t know the presenters of Cash in the Attic. Mr Kay also raised misgivings amongst researchers when he talked about “morning” and it became apparent he didn’t mean an event that had gone on since the night before.
However it was at the after-show party that Mr Kay’s fate was sealed when he walked straight by the Pot Noodle stand and instead picked up a plate of pasta and a glass of wine from an area set aside for production staff. Seeing what he had done, Corpus Christi team member Gail Trimble was heard to exclaim, ‘Does not compute, does not compute.’
