Obama to give special backing to Brown
US President Barack Obama has lifted restrictions on federal funding for research on new stem cell lines. Mr Obama signed an executive order in a major reversal of US policy, pledging to “vigorously support” new research.
It is understood from White House sources that among the first areas of new research to be funded is a programme to grow a new spinal cord for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. When Mr Brown flew to Washington last week, President Obama, who hadn’t realised he was coming, gave him a gift of a box set of DVDS which his wife’s sister had given him for Christmas. Realising this was not a suitable present for a prime minister, Obama’s aides asked Brown’s people what he needed. A bit of backbone was the answer.
US medical experts hope to have the new spine grown so that Mr Brown can have it fitted in time for the next General Election. This has however prompted allegations of partiality from the Conservative party who say that it is only fair that stem cells should also be used to grow a new chin for David Cameron.
